    Curlformers, How-To

    By Genevieve | Beauty | 4 comments | 1 November, 2014 | 0

Last week, I posted this picture of me in Curlformers and commented that I felt like a kid again having to sleep in curlers. I had several people interested in these curlers and asked questions such as, where did you get those, how much did they cost, how did they work and how to put them in. (They cost $13.60 for all 40 curlers and the hook on Amazon.com. I have attached the link above.)

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED POST. I have just been very curious of these curlers and wanted to give them a try.)

    Curlformers

I had 24 curlers in here.

So this post is for all those interested in trying these fun curlers. They are an alternative to a heat set curl that you would do with a curling iron. I actually love these curlers because I don’t have to apply a lot of product to my hair and hold a hot curling iron next to my head as I have three small boys running around me.

This package came with 40 curlers. I applied 19 curlers the first time, but I have started putting in all 40 because with my short hair I wanted more defined ringlets instead of just an overall curly look. With a little practice (doing this set 3 times) I am able to put in all 40 curlers in about 15 minutes. Don’t get discouraged! The first time took me an hour. Note: I have thin, fine, short hair. If you have medium thickness I personally think 40 is the perfect amount for you. If you have thick hair I recommend buying 2 packages of 40.

I have applied these curlers to soaking wet hair and slept in them. I also have applied these to dry hair that I have lightly spritzed with a spray bottle making the hair about 10% wet. I personally liked the dry hair option better. The wet hair curls looked much more compact and smashed, but the curl lasts for days. While the dry hair curls looked much more soft and natural like I did them with a curling iron. I will provide pictures of both so you can decide for yourself.

    {Almost} Dry Hair Application

I have put together a few pictures of some tricks that I have come up with to make the application very easy and quick. Here they are . . .

NOTE: For the wet hair application: All I did was put some leave-in conditioner in my hair before putting in the curlers. No other product! Next time I think I will put some Moroccan oil in to get a smooth silky curl, but really no product in needed!!! For the dry hair application (that is pictured below): I did on my second day of hair and applied very little Moroccan oil to my hair with it dry.

Here is how my hair looked before I began {this is the almost dry hair application}. . . Curlformers

Section off your hair into rows of hair that are as big as or smaller than the mouth of the curler. If you take bigger than the mouth of the curler your hair will pull and tug and not go into the curler. I part off an entire row around the head and gently mist that section/row of hair.Curlformers

Before you pick up the piece of hair that will go into the curler. Slide a curler all the way onto the hook. Note: I have read several reviews of the hook breaking. If this happens or if you don’t want to risk it happening to you, buy a Curlformer Hook from the actual brand of Curlformers. They are higher quality and should not break. I personally have had no problems with mine so far. {Fingers crossed.}Curlformers

Now pick up a piece that is as big as or smaller than the mouth of the curler. Now twist that piece just next to the scalp.Curlformers

Slide the hook all the way onto the hair. If any strands of hair are outside of the hook they will snag and catch as you try to pull the hair through the curler. Curlformers

Now push the curler’s rubber end up to the hair.Curlformers

Now you can let go of the piece of hair you were holding. The rubber part of the curler will hold that piece in place. Now pull the hook down and out to pull the hair smoothly into the curler. Note: If you feel any resistance while pulling the hook and hair into the curler. Immediately back it out and start that piece over. You don’t want to break off pieces of your hair. The hair should glide smoothly into the curler.Curlformers

Now continue this process all over your head until you have placed all your hair into curlers. Once in a while, I will have a curler flip funny. To fix this just grab both ends of the curler, pull straight and then let go of the curler. It should make the curler pop back into it’s correct shape.CurlformersCurlformers

When I finish putting all the curlers in I have curlers hanging in my face. I grab the top curlers and slide a hair elastic on to just hold them out of my face.

    Curlformers

I had all 40 curlers in here.

    CurlformersCurlformers

After your hair is dry {for my hair I wait about 30-40 minutes, while we eat breakfast and I do makeup, when I do the almost dry hair application} remove the curlers by pulling the curler straight and pulling it down off your hair, sliding your hair easily out of the curlers. Note: If you plan on wrapping these in the morning and need them to dry quickly you can buy a hair dryer hood that hooks onto your existing hair dryer.

Now you can wear these curlers in separated ringlets, gently separated using with your fingers as a comb, or you can comb through these curls with a brush to give you a beach curl look. Enjoy and I hope this post was helpful!

I bought these, but wasn’t sure how to use them, so thanks for the step by step! I’m giving them to my girls for Christmas. Kinda looks like a LaLaloopsey doll when they are all in!

Just wondering what size of curlers you bought was it barrel, corkscrew, spiral and how long. Thanks!

      • Genevieve Reply September 6, 2016 at 8:29 PM

They are the extra long spiral curlers.
